From late June the ghats change completely: waterfalls appear where there was bare rock, and the whole range goes an improbable green. It is also the season that demands the most from a driver.
The drive
Break the route into three-hour legs with real stops. Visibility drops fast in heavy rain, and the pass sections are best driven in daylight, mid-morning, after the overnight fog lifts.

An experienced outstation driver over a self-drive rental. Ghat roads in monsoon are a skill, not an adventure.
