Business class is rarely worth full price. It is frequently worth 40% of it — and the gap between those two numbers is entirely mechanical. Here's the machinery.
Fare classes are the whole game
Airlines don't sell 'business class', they sell buckets — J, C, D, I, Z — each with different upgrade and mileage rules. A discounted Z fare often costs less than a flexible economy Y fare on the same aircraft.
Bid upgrades, timed properly
Most bid-upgrade systems clear 24–48 hours before departure. Bid the minimum on light loads, and don't bid at all on Monday-morning or Friday-evening metro routes — those cabins sell themselves.
Award seats open in two waves
Roughly 330 days out, and again inside 14 days when the airline releases unsold inventory. If you missed the first wave, set an alert instead of paying cash.
